Procesindustrieën genereren significante hoeveelheden waterige afvalstromen met hoge zoutconcentraties. Vele bevatten ook organische componenten. Verdunnen om vervolgens te lozen mag meestal niet. De transport- en verwerkingskosten nemen echter toe. De afvalstromen opconcentreren voor transport helpt echter kosten beperken. Bovendien wordt recycleren van water en zouten een prioriteit.
